Summer Programme 2009

Welcome to another Summer Programme, which we hope will be completed this year without being washed away!! Our success as a Society has brought us problems as we have difficulties getting all our members to the visits, we have discussed this situation at length and return to the option of 'first come first served'. Visits with restricted numbers will require a reply slip to be completed and returned. Where payment is required in advance please submit individual cheques for each event. If you wish to receive confirmation that you have been allocated a place please enclose a stamped addressed envelope for your reply. If you wish to join us, book your place early.

Some events have a charge to cover the cost of guides, admission etc. Friends and non-members are always welcome where room allows but we do have a surcharge of £1 for them. It would help our treasurer if members were responsible for collecting this fee from their guests.

VISIT TO PURTON on Gloucester to Sharpness Ship Canal

Following the illustrated talk by Paul Barnett (Marine Historian) to the Society in the Winter Programme, this gives us a chance to visit this remarkable site. Our day will start with a trip, including commentary, down the canal commencing at the National Waterways Museum Gloucester. The commentary refers to many historic points along this old industrial area of Gloucester. We return back to the dock area at 11.30a.m. There will be free time before we board the coach to travel to Purton to be met by our guide, Paul Barnett.

The afternoon visit (approximately 2 hours) will be on the side of the Severn estuary and you should bring wet weather gear and stout footwear. There are no toilet facilities at Purton but we hope to be able to visit the church hall for tea and a comfort stop (to be confirmed) before the visit.
